A Sydney man allegedly held a woman captive for more than a year and forced her to work as a prostitute by tasering her.
Haytham Abuquta appeared in Parramatta Bail Court yesterday charged with the aggravated sexual assault of a 29-year-old woman, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.
Police say the 29-year-old woman was working in a brothel in Guildford when she met Mr Abuquta and they became friends. He eventually "convinced" her to move in with him.
Court documents state the woman told police Abuquta took her passport and mobile phone from her and forced her to work as a prostitute in different brothels for up to 18 hours a day after claiming she owed him $20,000.
Police allege on June 10 Abuquta punched the woman in the face over a dispute about a laptop before he tasered and raped her.
The woman ran away and called police before she was admitted to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital with several taser injuries on her body.
In a police interview Abuquta allegedly said the woman was his girlfriend and that she was a heavy user of the drug ice.
Police found drug paraphernalia when they searched the unit where the offences are alleged to have happened.
Abuquta was refused bail and will appear at Burwood Local Court on June 16.
