Two diggers in very serious condition Empty

Two Australian soldiers remain in a very serious condition following a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on Monday in which three of their mates died.

A third wounded soldier is in a serious condition while another four are regarded as satisfactory.

No decision has been made yet to transfer any of the soldiers to Germany for further medical treatment, Defence Minister John Faulkner says.

"Six of the soldiers have undergone surgery," he told ABC Radio on Tuesday.

"The two soldiers who are in a very serious condition are in intensive care."

All seven soldiers are being treated in Afghanistan.

"No decision has yet been made when any or all of those soldiers will be moved to the Landstuhl regional medical centre which is in Germany," Senator Faulkner said.

"This will depend on their conditions and a range of other professional assessments that will be made."

The deaths of the three commandos from the Special Operations Task Force brings to 16 the number of Australian soldiers killed in the war since 2001.

All seven commandos were aboard a helicopter - most likely a CH-47 Chinook - on their way to an operation in Kandahar.

The three dead soldiers were on their third tour of Afghanistan.

Senator Faulkner said the commando group was being inserted into a remote area of southern Afghanistan.

"It was an operation to disrupt insurgent lines of communications," he said, adding it was particularly difficult and dangerous work.
