Police first swarmed to the Lakeside Pakenham property on Tuesday, after receiving a report that bones were buried in the backyard.

Leader was first on the scene as members from the homicide squad and forensic units cordoned off the property as a crime scene from about 1pm.

Police began digging in the backyard, but would not confirm reports yesterday that a human bone had been found.

A 31-year-old Cranbourne man was interviewed by police yesterday, but released pending further inquiries.

Police today confirmed that remains suspected to be those of a newborn child were discovered about 2.30pm.

A pathologist will visit the scene to make a preliminary assessment.

Cardinia CIU is investigating and will prepare a brief for the Coroner.

UPDATE 5.27pm: NEIGHBOURS say they are in shock after a newborn baby's remains were uncovered in a suburban backyard.

Homicide squad detective David Snare confirmed today that the remains were those of a child but refused to provide futher details.

It is understood police found the child's remains just after midday after three days of digging.

Neighbour Catherine Morgan said a married couple lived in the home with three children.

''I used to hear a baby crying but I just thought the kid got older and it had got quieter, you don't really think too much about it,'' she said.

''It's just horrible. They're just your average family.''

Another neighbour, "Sultana", said the family appeared to be a normal young family.

''I think maybe she must have been pregnant and maybe its a baby she gave birth to? I don't know what to think,'' she said.

The home's occupants are not currently in police custody.

The discovery followed a tip given to police yesterday afternoon, authorities said.

But police have so far refused to reveal the sex, age, or how long the body had been in the backyard.

“As a result of the information received, obviously police have been at these premises for the past couple of days conducting a search, Cardinia Inspector Wayne Viney said late this afternoon at a media conference outside the house.

As a result of that search using the forensic crime scene members, we’ve located what we believe to be the remains of a child, and those remains have been transferred to coronial services for further investigation.”

A 31-year-old Cranbourne man has already been questioned and released by police, after forensic experts yesterday continued to dig up the backyard of the house in the Lakeside Pakenham estate.

A pathologist has gone to the scene to make a preliminary assessment, while Cardinia CIU detectives are expected to prepare a brief for the Coroner.

Officers first headed to the scene on Tuesday where they cordoned off the home as a crime scene about 1pm.

Earlier this week a bone was found at the property, but it was ruled out as human remains.
