A one-year-old boy has died after he was hit by a 4WD driven by his father in the driveway of the family's Melbourne home.

Dhiyan Gahir had escaped his grandmother's attention, while she was tending to another child, and tried collect a toy from underneath the vehicle.

Police believe the car's height may have been a factor in the accident.

"Unfortunately dad hasn't seen the child as he's driven out of the driveway and unfortunately, collided with the child, causing serious head injuries, which resulted in the child dying a short time later," Senior Constable Mick Prodan told reporters at the scene.

Family and friends have arrived at the Landscape Drive home at Hillside, in Melbourne's northwest, to offer condolences to the boy's parents.

Police will prepare a report for the coroner after the incident on Tuesday morning.

Ambulance Victoria said paramedics attended the scene soon after the incident, but the child had already died.

Sad
