A US woman acting as a surrogate for her infertile daughter has given birth to her own grandson.

Kristine Casey, 61, helped her daughter Sara Connell and son-in-law Bill become first-time parents last Wednesday when she gave birth to a baby boy, the KTLA reports.

Mrs Casey had her last pregnancy 30 years ago and was already 10 years past menopause when she agreed to be the surrogate for her 35-year-old daughter.

Mrs Connell's husband Bill said he only agreed to go ahead with the pregnancy once they were certain the "science was there".

"I didn't want us to subject ourselves to another very risky, possibly devastating, scenario," Mr Connell said.

"Infertility is one thing, but putting your mother-in-law in danger kicks it up to another level altogether."

Mrs Casey underwent hormone treatment to prepare her uterus for the pregnancy and got pregnant on the second cycle of IVF, with Mr and Mrs Connell as the biological parents.

The grandmother said: "I thought, 'Wow, three of the happiest days of my life were giving birth to my daughters,' and I thought I could choose to do this for someone I love."

Mother and daughter held hands as Finnean Lee Connell was delivered by cesarean section.

"It's such a miracle," Mrs Connell said.

"It grew beyond the two of us having a child … It was about the closeness with my mother, and our family having this experience that was unique and special."

Although Mrs Casey had experienced some complication with her kidneys after the c-section, the situation soon improved.

Dr Susan Gerber, obstetrician and maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said: "After delivery, her urine output was lower than we expected and there was no discernible cause… With relatively little intervention, it turned around.

"The surgery itself was uncomplicated, and the emotional context of this delivery was so profound."

Mr and Mrs Connell spent years trying to having a child after Mrs Connell stopped ovulating in 2004
She received IVF treatment and gave birth to stillborn twins, and later had a miscarriage.

According to state health department records, the oldest woman to give birth in Illinois was 58 when she had her baby in 2006. But data on births after 2008 is not yet available
