PostSubject: DOCS books baby into rehab with alcoholic mother   DOCS books baby into rehab with alcoholic mother EmptyOctober 8th 2009, 11:59 pm

http://www.news.com.au/story/0,27574,26185506-421,00.html

A SEVEN-week-old baby could be forced to be with his alcoholic mother as she undertakes rehabilitation because DOCS wants to save time and money.

Baby "Jake" - the fifth child to be removed from the mother's care - has been placed with a foster family.

And even though there is no medical reason why the baby should go to rehab, case workers have booked him into Odyssey House in southwest Sydney with his mother, The Daily Telegraph reports.

Jake's horrified foster carer said that the woman drank all through the pregnancy with her newest son and the carer now fears for his safety.

Jake has thrived with the foster carer after being born at full term weighing just 2.2kg - the weight of a six-week premature baby. In his first three weeks in care, Jake gained 1.5kg.

His carer believes Jake is being sent to rehab so DOCS can avoid the costs and staff time of taking him to three weekly meetings with his mother, visits she has regularly missed.

"Somebody has to transport him, supervise and that costs a bit of money. The only drug rehab they could get the mother into is quite a distance from here," Jake's carer said.

"He came into care as a two-day-old, straight from hospital. He is baby number five of a chronic alcoholic. All four of his older siblings are in long-term foster care."

"They (DOCS) were going to be asking (the court) for him to go into long-term care like his siblings. That was the plan.

"Then they decided the baby can go to rehab with the mother. She's done rehab before and it has not been successful."

For legal reasons baby Jake, not his real name, his mother and foster carer cannot be identified.

DOCS admitted it had decided to send Jake to rehab with his mother but last night, after inquiries from The Daily Telegraph and a complaint by the carer to the NSW Ombudsman, said the decision was under review.

"If the baby is to stay with the mother at Odyssey House, he will be placed in a nursery and receive 24-hour care from specialist staff," a DOCS spokeswoman said.

"While at Odyssey House, the mother's parenting skills will be assessed over a four to six-week period and Community Services will use this assessment to inform future decisions about his care.

"No decision has been made about the long-term care of the baby."

Opposition community services spokeswoman Pru Goward said Jake should remain with his foster carer.

"The community is sick to death of neglectful and abusive parents being given non-stop chances to prove themselves - all the while as the needs of the child come last," she said.

DOCS alerted the carer to the rehab move two days ago, at the same time as the NSW Ombudsman released a damning report into how the department had failed Ebony, the girl whose starvation death shocked the state.

Experts said yesterday a low birth weight was one symptom of foetal alcohol syndrome and if the disability was confirmed, Jake would likely have an intellectual impairment, cognitive difficulties and behavioural problems.

One of his siblings suffers from the condition and Jake has fortnightly appointments at a Sydney hospital with a paediatrician.

THATS DISGUSTING!!!!!!!! she doesnt have her other kids for a bloody reason! why would u send a newborn baby (a very stressful/trying age for someone SOBER) to someone like that!!!!!
yes it will grow up without its parents BUT in this case its whats better for the child!
i was watching tyra banks the otherday n there was a teenage girl on there who was 16 n she was 'mothering' her mother cause her mum was an alcoholic! she swwore at her daughter called her names. in the middle of a school concert called out I NEEDA PEE everyone heard her! toke her in the car while she was off her face! n the poor 16 yr old didnt know what to do anymore! the poor girl was suffering so bad!!!! the specialist that was on the show said it can take 8-9 times of relapsing for a alcholic to become sober! SO CLEARLY this lady isnt going to be sober n once again another innocent child will be harmed or put in harms way just for the sake of the system!!!
SORRY but its made me angry reading this! give the child a chance n give it to someone that wants it n will love it like their own!

I couldnt agree more!!! That mother does NOT deserve her baby, the baby deserves better. Take the baby and put it with someone who wants him, not a selfish alcholic mother who couldnt give a rats about that baby

like honestly i understand its a 'diesease' or whatever BUT seriously after losing her first 4 kids u would think she wouldve done somehting about it? n gotten help n kept getting help until she stopped relapsing? the fact she hasnt done anything about it YET by choice after losing 4 clearly shows she just doesnt care enough about those innocent kids!
if i was addicted to something n i lost my child because of it id do everything in my power to get off whatever it was i was addicted to inorder to get my child back OR at least keep the ones i had still!

my BIL is an alcholic so i see what it does first hand BUT if she has been in rehab and it hasnt worked then that is saying something. The baby deserves a life!!!!

My BIL has been sober now for 3 months and doing great, he is doing it himself after drinking around a carton a day for the last year (been an alcholic his whole life but slowly getting worse as he has gotten older) so it can be done!!!

Even if she did do well in rehab and get sober the stress of having to look after a child with Foetal Alcohol Syndrome would make her relapse for sure. That child is going to be a very high needs child who will need a lot of steady, secure support in his life.

Grr at everyone who wants to put that baby with his mother she shouldn't have him. Docs is useless and hasn't done it job properly for a bloody long time. Too many kids have died and been severely mistreated because of them. I think if good people know a child is in danger and can help then they should legally be allowed to rescue an abused child, kind of like a citizens arrest but there would have to guide lines and strict procedure on how to do it like with police support and some sort of government payments to accomadate temporary care of a child. I don't know.... but something's gotta be done about the system it's all wrong.

I agree with that. I have seen children abused (my sisters kids) and i think it is pathetic in how much DOCS does to help. FFS the children deserve more then they get from them
