A man driving a stolen car has been killed and a mother and young girl critically injured in a collision in central Victoria on Tuesday night.
The man was driving north on the Goulburn Valley Highway about 7km north of Seymour when police believe he swerved onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a Holden Commodore travelling south just before 9pm (AEST).
Police said the man, who died at the scene, had stolen the Mazda earlier on Tuesday from Footscray in Melbourne's west, was also involved in a theft from a Seymour supermarket and had driven off without paying for petrol prior to the crash.
The 42-year-old woman and her 10-year-old passenger, both from Seymour, had to be cut from the wreckage of their car.
The woman was taken to The Alfred hospital and the girl was transported to the Royal Childrens Hospital with critical injuries.
The deceased man is yet to be identified.
The fatality takes Victoria's road toll to 160, compared to 144 at the same time last year.
