A 42-year-old woman is fighting for her life after a man driving a stolen car crashed into her vehicle when he swerved onto the wrong side of the road.
The man killed in the accident on the Goulburn Valley Highway north of Melbourne just before 9pm (AEST) on Tuesday was a 25-year-old from Ascot Vale.
The woman's 10-year-old daughter was taken to the Royal Children's Hospital in a stable condition.
A spokesman for The Alfred hospital said the woman remained in a critical condition.
Police said the dead man had stolen a Mazda earlier on Tuesday from Footscray in Melbourne's west, he was involved in a theft from a Seymour supermarket and had driven off without paying for petrol prior to the crash.
