Matt Newton was sedated by ambulance crews after one of two alleged attacks on his girlfriend Rachael Taylor at a hotel in Rome, a report claims.

Actress Taylor yesterday applied for an apprehended violence order against Newton, alleging that she was the victim of two unprovoked assaults while the pair were holidaying in Italy.

Taylor alleged that "this action follows a series of gravely serious incidents, including and not limited to two unprovoked violent assaults" that she claimed occurred on the 13th and 14th of August.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Newton was treated by paramedics after Taylor screamed for help in the lobby of the Westin Excelsior in Rome.

Police crews were also called to the hotel, but Taylor chose not to press charges, the report said. In a statement released yesterday, the actress said that she fears "for her personal safety, well being and security following events — both in Australia and while on a recent holiday to Rome, Italy."

The release of the statement follows the news that Newton has been forced to quit his role on X Factor and return to rehab.

Newton was on his way to Dublin to film segments for X Factor when he stopped over in Rome to spend time with Taylor, who was on a break from filming thriller, The Darkest Hour.

He was reportedly escorted home by a producer and his management company has since terminated their relationship.

A FremantleMedia source said "on arrival in Dublin it was decided that Matthew needed to return to Australia to the care of his family."

Taylor has said in her statement that she wants the issue to be a public one.

"After much consideration and struggle I have made this personal decision to send a clear public message that violence, threats, abuse and intimidation are not acceptable and should be dealt with by the full capacity of the law."

His role on the new talent search show was thought to be a second chance for Newton, whose public image suffered when he was charged with intimidating and assaulting his then-girlfriend, actress Brooke Satchwell.

He pleaded guilty to common assault but the conviction was later dismissed.

Last month he told New Idea that he was a "work in progress."

Channel 7 has not decided how they will deal with pre-recorded footage of Newton

Man this guy must have MASSIVE drug or alcohol problems. And his ex Rachel has put an AVO out against him too.
Hope he gets clean and sorts himself out otherwise i reckon he's going to end up dead.
